During the height of the jazz era in Washington, U Street served as the epicenter of that form of music catering to the cultured elite, and no other club was better recognized for it's assemblage of jazz musicians, performers, and impromptu amateurs than one located in the basement level of 11th and U Street. It was known the world over as Bohemian Caverns.
