The Civilian Radioactive Waste Management Program is complex, but its goal is simple. Ourprimary goal is safe, permanent disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactivewaste. Safe disposal requires the protection of human health and safety and the environ-ment—for thousands of years into the future. Our goal has large domestic and internationalimpacts.

The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network (EREN) is the U.S. Department of Energy's comprehensive resource for energy efficiency and renewable energy information.

The mission of the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) is to reduce the use and cost of energy in the Federal sector by advancing energy efficiency, water conservation, and the use of solar and other renewable energy sources. FEMP accomplishes its mission by leveraging both Federal and private resources to provide technical and financial assistance to other Federal agencies, which take actions and make investments that increase energy efficiency and renewable energy utilization, and reduce water consumption at their facilities.

Developing technologies to reduce energy use in buildings By incorporating advanced energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies that reduce energy use into building designs, the U.S. building sector is achieving significant energy and cost savings.

The Nuclear Energy Program represents the core of the U.S. Government'sexpertise in nuclear engineering and technology. Our activities benefit theAmerican people by helping to maintain the Nation's access to diverse andenvironmentally responsible sources of energy, and by advancing ourcountry's economic and technological competitiveness.

The mission of the BER program is to develop the knowledge needed to identify, understand, and anticipate the long-term health and environmental consequences of energy production, development, and use. This mission is carried out through the program's support of peer-reviewed research at DOE National Laboratories, universities, and private institutions. The research is also designed to provide science in support of the Energy Policy Act of 1992.

The Office of Enforcement and Investigation implements the Department of Energy's Congressionally mandated nuclear safety enforcement program. It assists in creating the infrastructure to implement the compliance assurance programs necessary to comply with enforceable requirements. The Office, which employs technical enforcement specialists, attorneys and professional investigators, works closely with both DOE field and program elements, General Counsel, and the Office of Nuclear Safety Policy and Standards in developing implementation and compliance policies and procedures.

The Office of Environment, Safety and Health is the Departmental advocate for excellence in programs to protect the environment, as well as the health and safety of workers at Department of Energy facilities and the public. The Office's central role as a Department-wide resource has been developed with the participation of a wide range of Stakeholders, and reflects the Office's statutory and regulatory mandates.
