Open since 1974 and named for modern art collector Joseph Hirshhorn (1899-1981), the Hirshhorn Museum provides public access to some of the best modern sculpture and paintings available. At the center of the museum's original collection are over 12,000 works donated by Hirshhorn himself.
Between the Hirshhorn and the National Mall grounds lies the Hirshhorn's Sculpture Garden. The Garden is in a recessed area, and it was redesigned in 1981 and 1993 to allow for easier access and to enhance the landscaping.
