This style of dancing, "Ise Ondo," is considered to be quite
representative of Japanese folk music. The performers march around the
room in costume, beating sticks together to keep time. The uniformity of the steps and the costumes creates the illusion that these individual women have ceased to exist separately and have joined together to form one entity. Perhaps symbolic of the terrain of their home; Japan being one country made up of many different islands. |
