For the 2001 White House holiday theme, Laura Bush chose "Home for the Holidays" to celebrate the joy of family and loved ones. "Because this year's holday season follows a national tragedy, both home and family have speacial meaning to all Americans," said Mrs. Bush. "Gatherings of loved ones - familiar faces in familiar places - can be a tremendous source of strength and reassurance during this season of rememberance and goodwill."
One artist from every state was asked to create an ornament for the presidential tree. The ornament had to represent a historic house or place of worship unique to his or her state. It had to be predominantly white for this year's Christmas tree theme, which is Home for the Holidays.
