2  Port Huron Project 3: We Must Name the System

The parallels between the war in Iraq today and the war in Vietnam forty years ago have been the subject of ongoing debate on Capitol Hill. This summer, artist and Brown University professor Mark Tribe is exploring those parallels by staging reenactments of Vietnam-era protest speeches on the locations where they were originally delivered.

At a reenactment on July 26 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., an actor cast by Tribe will deliver a speech originally given by Paul Potter, President of the Students for a Democratic Society, at a March on Washington in 1965. Potter criticizes President Lyndon B. Johnson for falsely using the defense of freedom to justify bloodshed, and calls on the citizens of the United States to create a massive social movement to end the war in Vietnam.

This event is part of the Port Huron Project, a series of reenactments of protest speeches from the 1960s and 70s. Each performance in the project is staged at the site of the original speech and is delivered by an actor to an audience of invited guests and passers-by. Videos of these events are then distributed online and on DVD. The project is named after the Port Huron Statement, the visionary manifesto of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), a radical student group formed in 1962.

You can find photos and video of past events and more information about the Port Huron Project at http://www.porthuronproject.net.
