National Geographic has just kicked off its Habitat Hero campaign, the million-kid movement that is rallying kids from all walks of life to step up as the next generation of environmental caretakers. The campaign is aimed at inspiring kids to preserve habitats that are at risk of becoming extinct. Even the littlest heroes can plant butterfly gardens and weed out invasive plants to help create new habitats in their own backyards and schoolyards.

April 22, 2000 marks the 30th anniversary of Earth Day, which was invented to commemorate environmental awareness.
