Northern Virginia Family Service is a local community resource organization that serves low-income individuals and families. NVFS has a new mentoring program in the city of Falls Church. The goal is to help the city of Falls Church youth with academic performance, and to improve life and social skills. Children in our program are in middle school. Many of them have suffered or witnessed domestic violence and neglect; others' are new comers and need to improve their English, and still others' need a caring adult who can offer emotional support to them. We need mentors (21 years old and above) who are available every Thursday (starting in June) from 3-5 PM to meet their mentors at the Falls Church Community Center. TTP seeks to foster a life-long love of learning in DC Public School children and thereby increase their educational achievement by creating a resource-rich school community that encourages parental involvement, voluntary reading and learning. TTP is implementing Community Nights at the Library to accomplish this mission. Families attend and are served dinner. Then the parents attend a workshop on the importance of reading with their children while their children are read to by family mentors. TTP is currently looking for family mentors to spend 4 evenings per academic semester in the school reading and engaging in activities with the children.
