In 1867 Congress formed the Lincoln Monument Association. Inside the 99 foot-tall marble temple is a 19 foot-tall sculpture of Abraham Lincoln seated in a chair. The sculpture was designed by Daniel Chester French, and was assembled from 28 blocks of Georgia marble that were carved by the Piccirilli Brothers.
