Grant Wood All-City Drum Corps
Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Thank you for your support!

The primary purpose of the Grant Wood All-City Drum Corps is to provide learning opportunities for all children in Cedar Rapids. We emphasize both musical and academic learning. Our goal is to prepare all students to be lifelong learners, responsible family members, and productive citizens.
During the school year, students meet at school from 3:30-5:30 every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and every Saturday morning when possible. On Tuesday and Thursday, learning zone takes place. Students receive tutoring and small group instruction from volunteers who are local college students, Grant Wood teachers, and parents. Saturdays are used for Drum Corps drills and for performing community service projects such as planting trees.

Slayton Thompson
Director
The Grant Wood All-City Drum Corps is a grass roots effort that started in my basement and grew into what it is today; a group of 100+ multiage students from 14 different schools. We work closely with the Oak-Hill Jackson Neighborhood Association which was an outgrowth of Drum Corps. Our parents are involved in leadership roles giving at least 700 volunteer hours to the school each month.
Benefits to students
1. Provide students with an ongoing relationship with a caring adult
2. Provide a safe place with structured activities during non-school hours

3. Provide a healthy start for students

4. Provide students with a marketable skill through an effective education
5. Provide opportunities for students to give back to the community

6. Unite neighbors together through shared responsibility

The drum corps has participated in several events in the Cedar Rapids community as well as in many other events across the US including President Clinton's inauguration.
