Ten days after President Washington's death in 1799 a Congressional committee recommended a monument be built to honor our Nation's first President.

What would a building like this be good for?

It is like an office building without any usable square footage, with a top floor observation area. It looks like a lookout tower to me. Why else would this structure have been designed? Perhaps, merely for symbolic reasons. It looks just like the Egyptian Obelisks that were erected in honor of Pharaohs and later moved to their conqueror's homeland as a symbol of power.
