Stanford and Navy met tonight for the first time since the two schools battled in 1965 which resulted in a 7-7 tie. Attendance announced as 35,670, the fourth-largest crowd to see a game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium behind: 1. 36,172 vs. Air Force (Oct. 11, 1997), 2. 36,009 vs. West Virginia (Oct. 3, 1998) and 3. 35,753 vs. Air Force (Oct. 9, 1993). Marco Nelson scored three touchdowns for the Midshipmen and Karlos Whittaker ran for 110 yards on seven carries, becoming the first freshman in Navy history to have a 100-yard rushing game. The mission of the Naval Academy focuses on developing midshipmen morally, mentally and physically in order to provide leaders of character for the Navy and Marine Corps.
