The Department of Education is headquartered in Washington, D.C., where about 3,600 staff work in several buildings: Lyndon Baines Johnson Department of Education Building (which includes the Secretary's office), Regional Office Building 3, Potomac Center Plaza, Capitol Place, 1990 K Street, Union Center Plaza, and L'Enfant Plaza.

On September 17, 2007, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings honored President Lyndon Baines Johnson in a ceremony officially renaming the U.S. Department of Education building at 400 Maryland Avenue, S.W. in Washington, D.C. as the Lyndon Baines Johnson Department of Education Building.

Lyndon B. Johnson was initiated on October 30, 1937 in Johnson City Lodge No. 561, at Johnson City, Texas, but completed only the Entered Apprentice, or first, of the three Masonic degrees.
