You are correct Sandy: parasailing is done with a parachute attached to a boat via a rope; paragliding is done with, well, a paraglider which can be powered or unpowered but is essentially a massive, wing-shaped, ram-air (so as to provide rigidity in the wing)"parachute" but with a much better "glide ratio" than a standard parachute. I think the world record for an unpowered paraglider is around 120 miles (start to finish) from jumping off a mountain utilizing updrafts and thermals.
